Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students, Staff, and Friends of Saint David’s Parish School,
Catholic Education Week
This week, from Monday 12 May, until Sunday 18 May, marks Catholic Education Week, a celebration of 180 years of Catholic Education in Australia. As we celebrate a Jubilee Year for the Catholic Church, our Catholic schools are asked to explore this year’s theme, ‘Shine with Open Hearts’. How do we showcase at our school how our students and staff shine, live and lead with open hearts? How do we foster this spirit in our school through actions of kindness, respect, service, learning and ultimately reflecting Gospel values and the values of Catholic education? Have a look at some images of our students with their thoughts on how they shine at Saint David’s Parish School.
Our New Pope
Last week was a historic moment for the Catholic Church, with the recent election of our new pope, Pope Leo XlV. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a missionary from Chicago who spent much of his career in Peru, was chosen as the new pontiff. His election marks the first time a North American has been elected pope. His first words as Pope have been ‘Peace be with you all!’ and this is certainly something our world needs at this time.
Parents and Friends - Thank you!
A tremendous thank you to our Parents and Friends Committee for their outstanding efforts in providing all our students with gifts to purchase last Friday at the Mother’s/Special VIP stall. Our P&F are a committed group of parents/caregivers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring an additional element of service to our community. We are grateful for their dedication to our community.

Bright Stars Transition Program
Our Bright Stars Transition Program began two weeks ago, led by Mrs Kim Chenoweth. We welcome all our new little people to our school community, and wish them well as they begin their educational journey with us.
Mrs Mim Everett’s Retirement
Mrs Everett has decided to retire at the end of June, and we are in the process of appointing a new Out of Hours School Care, Director. Mim has worked positively to provide an active OSHC service and was instrumental in implementing a Vacation Care/ Holiday Program for Saint David’s Parish School a few years ago. We will be sad to see her go, but understand that Mrs Everett wants to travel and spend time with her family. She will be missed.
Welcoming New Staff Members
This term, we welcome a new member to our teaching team, Mrs Amy Pellegrini, who has replaced Mrs Angel Golotta. We welcome Nina Barnden, Ella Hill and Jessica Potts, who are educators supporting our students. Both Ella and Jess are known to our community, as they are members of the OSHC Team. Mrs Tessa Hallet, has returned from Maternity Leave, and will be working with us on Mondays, supporting various teachers and students.
With every best wish,
National Reconciliation Week Community Prayer and Morning Tea
Parents/caregivers are warmly invited to attend a special celebration on Monday 2 June at 9:00 am beginning with Community Prayer, followed by a morning tea. Year 12 Kildare students have prepared the morning tea sourcing native Australian ingredients for our consumption. Uncle Ivan, Senior Aboriginal Elder, and grandfather to Isabella and Oliver, will be a special guest on the morning. We would love to welcome you there!
Leader of Learning, Diversity and Wellbeing
At Saint David’s Parish School, the wellbeing of our students is a top priority and an integral part of our school culture.
We continue to offer a variety of lunchtime initiatives to support student engagement and wellbeing. These include Chess Club, Lego Club, and opportunities for mindful colouring. In addition, the Wellbeing Room has become a popular space where students can enjoy quiet, calming activities such as knitting, providing a peaceful break during the school day.
At our recent staff development day, we explored the Real Schools concept of Positive Priming—a proactive approach to guiding student behaviour. Positive Priming involves clearly articulating the behaviours we want to see, helping students understand and align with our expectations. Rather than focusing on what not to do, we shift our language to highlight positive actions. For example, instead of saying, “Don’t slacken off,” we might say, “Keep pushing until the end—you’ve got this!” This approach creates a more supportive and motivating environment, helping students stay on track and focused.
Positive Priming is a powerful strategy that can also be effectively used at home. When we express confidence in our children and focus on the behaviours we want to see, they are more likely to respond positively. By affirming our belief in their ability to succeed, we help build their confidence and motivation. Jemma Rust offers a clear and insightful explanation of this approach in the video linked.
Real Schools VideoWe continue to implement Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a positive school culture. PBIS is an evidence-based, tiered framework that supports students' behavioural, academic, social, emotional, and overall wellbeing. It promotes a more predictable and supportive learning environment, encouraging positive student behaviour and social-emotional growth.
As part of this approach, we are reinforcing our high expectations through clear procedures, some of which you may have noticed displayed around the school as visual reminders. These cues help ensure consistency and clarity for all students. Our Positive Play Point system also remains a key feature of our PBIS framework, recognising and celebrating students who make positive choices. The collection box is nearly full, which means a special celebration is just around the corner!
During our Week 4 staff meeting, we will be hosting a regional moderation session in collaboration with Our Lady of Hope and St Francis Xavier schools. Teachers from all three schools will come together as professional colleagues to moderate student work following a summative assessment task. This collaborative process ensures that judgements about student achievement are consistent, fair, and comparable across our schools.
As always, we thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s learning journey. Together, we continue to build a nurturing and engaging environment where every student can thrive.
Wishing all our families a safe and enjoyable week ahead.
Warm Regards,
Remembering Pope Francis
It is with deep sadness that we begin our term with the news of the passing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936. His earthly journey has come to an end and has returned to God.
He wasn’t just a Church leader – he was a voice for justice, a friend to the forgotten, and a champion of young people. His heartbeat with love for all creation. He reminded us that faith isn’t about power – it’s about service, simplicity, and love. And so, we remember him – not like a distant figure in Rome, but as someone who truly walked the talk.
Pope Francis challenged us to show Christ’s mercy through our actions and to live out our faith in a way that draws others to the joy of the Gospel.
Prayer
God of Eternal Life,
You have called Pope Francis home.
We entrust him to Your loving arms – With all the saints, with all the holy ones, with all the people he served.
May his example burn brightly in the heart of every person here.
May we live simply, love deeply, and walk humbly, just like he taught us.
Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
Amen
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is the 267th Pope. He has taken the name Pope Leo XIV. Robert Prevost was born on September 14th 1955 in Chicago, Illinois.
He grew up in the Dalton, Illinois. Robert Prevost became a friar in the Order of Saint Augustine as a young man and was ordained a priest in 1982. He was bishop of Chiclayo in Peru between 2015 and 2023. Pope Francis appointed Bishop Robert a cardinal at St. Peter's Square in 2023. Pope Leo loves to play Wordle and his favourite sport is tennis.
At Community Prayer on Monday 19 May, we will celebrate our new Church leader, Pope Leo XIV. All parents and caregivers are most welcome to gather with us in the gym at 2:45pm.
Peaceful Kids Program
"Peaceful Kids is a mindfulness and Positive Psychology Program, to lessen anxiety and increase resilience in children." Students work in a small groups to develop their ability to be mindful and identify their feelings. If you would like your child to be considered to be part of this 8 week program, please email me (jeveruss@stdavids.catholic.edu.au) and include brief details about your reasoning for your request for your child to be considered for this program. Please note that an aspect of the program is parent/caregiver support to assist children to engage in activities that are to be done at home between weekly sessions.
Seasons for Growth Program
Learning to live with change and loss - Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Saint David’s Parish School, we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth. Seasons for Growth runs for eight weeks and each weekly session is 40-45 minutes. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise the new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.
If you think your child would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. This program will commence this term so if you are interested in your child/children being involved please let me know by Thursday 23 May.(jeveruss@stdavid.catholic.edu.au) If you require further information, please come in and see me in the Office.

The task began with research and careful planning, as students investigated the key phases of their selected life cycle and considered how best to visually represent each stage.
Using a range of recycled materials and artistic technique, they brought their ideas to life with vibrant colour, rich textures, and impressive attention to detail. The finished dioramas are a testament to their scientific understanding, creativity, and dedication.

Service Provision in Schools
As a part of our commitment to our mission and values, to working in partnership to enable each learner to thrive, and to ensure the health and safety of all people on school grounds, our school is implementing a new process for requests from families for Privately Engaged Service Provision in school, including National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) services.
This applies to new requests for Privately Engaged Service Provision in school, as well as to requests for existing Privately Engaged Service Provision in school to continue.
If you wish to make a request for Privately Engaged Service Provision to occur in school, please complete the attatched Parent/Guardian Request Form, and return it to the Front Office for consideration, at your earliest convenience.
Saint David’s Parish School will be introducing a ‘Concussion Officer’. Our Concussion Officer will be Tracy Roberts. The role of the Concussion Officer will be to liaise between parents and school staff regarding known concussions of students (whether they occur during, or outside of school time). The Concussion Officer will be responsible for communicating with school staff regarding exclusion time for sport, PE and overly active play as recommended by the student’s health care professional. They will also ensure that our school is managing any concussions as per the First Aid Procedure and the Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport.
Please note that the Concussion Officer is not an expert and is not expected to diagnose concussions. Their role will be similar to that of a Fire Warden, in that they ensure the school is following agreed concussion procedures and communicating to school staff as necessary.
If your child suffers a concussion, whether that be during school time, or out of school time, and they seek medical treatment from a health care professional, we ask that you provide a clearance from the health care professional. This clearance needs to be provided to Tracy with her regarding any specific needs for your child.
As social media and general media platforms have continued to expand, the ready availability of resources for parents/caregivers has also continued to appear across these platforms on the topic of raising healthy children – physically, emotionally and mentally.
This week, the focus is on some of the resources available for supporting boys in their development.
A husband and wife duo, Kasey Edwards and Dr Christopher Scanlon, have co-authored a book, ‘Bringing up boys who like themselves’ which has had many positive reviews:
The couple have also been interviewed widely regarding their research work on this topic. An interview is available at the link above, along with the opportunity to download the first chapter of this book for free.
Maggie Dent is another popular author and speaker on the topic of raising boys having raised four sons, and as a former teacher and counsellor:
‘Understanding Boys’ is a website developed by a school in Melbourne which provides many interesting resources on the joys and challenges of raising boys:
We hope you find some of these resources not only useful but very helpful in navigating your own individual journeys of developing healthy and resilient boys.
On Thursday 22 May, 54 of our students took to the fields at Modbury Vista Soccer Club, to represent our school in the annual SAPSASA Soccer Carnival. With six teams entered across the day, our students demonstrated not only their soccer skills, but also their teamwork, resilience, and school pride.
The weather couldn’t have been better—sunny skies and mild temperatures set the stage for a brilliant day of sport. There was a buzz of excitement as teams faced off against schools from across the district. Many goals were scored, plenty of laughs were shared, and our students embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
A huge congratulations goes to our Girls A Team, who were crowned Division 1 champions after a series of strong performances. Their success was guided by the expertise of Paul, who generously volunteered his time to coach and support the team—thank you, Paul!
We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the staff members who attended on the day and worked behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly. Your support and supervision were invaluable. A big thank you also goes out to the parents and family members who came along to cheer on our teams, your encouragement from the sidelines created a wonderful sense of community and was greatly appreciated by both students and staff.
Overall, the SAPSASA Soccer Carnival was a huge success and a memorable day for all involved. Congratulations to all our players, you represented our school with pride, positivity, and passion. We’re already looking forward to next year!
SAPSASA District Selections – Congratulations!
We’re thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of several of our students who have been selected to represent our district in SAPSASA sports!

Our work with Real Schools focuses on creating a positive and inclusive school culture. There are three pillars that support this, our language, our mindset and our conduct. We are also highlighting the importance of our teachers and staff having authority without being authoritarian. We do this by working with our families and children to understand motivations and work together to manage conflict in productive and affirming ways that reduce the likelihood of it reoccurring. Please see the flyer from Real Schools for more information. It has been great to see our students reciprocating the positive language that our teachers and educators are using in classrooms.
Just a reminder that the cut off time to order school lunches in the morning on the Qkr! app, is 8:30am. If your child has a lunch order, please make sure it is ordered prior to this time.
